So this is our first post on our new blog. I (Waves) am a trained primary school teacher who specialises on digital technologies. I am lucky enough to have been a lead teacher in the Garden to Table programme throughout my years of teaching and I really want to share that with my step children, L&P.
So a little bit about us... We moved into our gorgeous house about 3 months ago. We are fortunate enough to inherited a range of established fruit trees; plums, pears, apples, peaches, grapefruit, feijoas, limes, mandarins, lemons, guavas, macadamia nuts and loquats. We are looking forward to summer when most of these fruit trees will be plentiful.
Since moving in we have also planted an avocado tree which should be a great investment in 3-4 years time. We are told that we should get up to 250 avocados per year - at $4.50 a pop at times that equates to over $1000 in avocados alone!
Today we started planting out our vegetable planters and L&P have both written about what we did which I will post on their behalf.
I guess from my point of view I see gardening and cooking as a really cool family project which we can all get excited about. Then to use the fruit and vegetables we grow in our cooking is so rewarding. I hope this encourages L&P to eat lots of new things (although we already have really good eaters). The teacher in me also knows that this will be a huge learning opportunity for both of them in terms of oral and written language, the arts, maths, key competencies. I love that I can help them learn without them feeling like they are at school.
Bring on the 'going green' journey!
